Notes on viewing original images In January 1999 we began archiving the original SGI RGB images as 24-bit PNG files. The PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files retain all of the information in the orignal files but do a better compression of the information. They require less disk space to store and can be directly viewed inside of your web browser (at least inside of Netscape 4.5).
